With the recent pandemic taking effect, our traditional method of physically delivering design sprints in the usual fashion became obsolete almost over-night. Hear about our journey and the lessons we learnt when we attempted to flip this process into a digital world. Come and join the big conversation, we will be keen to hear from your thoughts and experiences too on the problems you have faced and solutions and tools you have used to overcome them.

In-house transformation: Is there a secret sauce?

Transformation was a hot topic pre-Covid and couldn’t be more pertinent now with increasing governance and economic pressures placed on the legal function. However, knowing where and when to start the transformation of an in-house function can be a daunting and undefined task –  how do you maximise time, effort and investment? Jo Anne Schwendinger, Chief Legal and Compliance officer at U.S company II-VI will be joining us to discuss her experiences of navigating the transformation journey. Drawing on her experiences we will explore triggers for change, how you pinpoint your starting place, benchmarking success and practical tips to respond to this emerging area of focus for in-house teams.

Jamie Whalebone
Jamie is the Director of Legal Consultancy & Transformation at DWF and is responsible for leading the transformation and consultancy practice within Managed Services, focusing on advising clients on in-house transformation activities, managed services outsourcing, and internally leading delivery optimisation projects across the group's practice areas. Jamie is also responsible for driving the legal tech strategy and adoption at DWF. He specialises in transforming legal service delivery through creating new operating models, process optimisation, and the integration of legal technology. Jamie was previously responsible for the setup, operational governance, and delivery of both a managed delivery team and a legal technology operations team at another international law firm. Jamie has experience in creating tech enabled legal solutions, including machine learning and digital workflow management, harnessing technology to create end-to-end legal solutions.

Jo Anne Schwendinger
Jo Anne Schwendinger was appointed to the position of General Counsel and Secretary of II-VI Incorporated, on March 6, 2017, and took on her current role of Chief Legal and Compliance Officer and Secretary in November of 2017. Prior to joining II-VI, Jo Anne served in the Legal Department at John Deere, where she held various positions, including Regional General Counsel for Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Jo Anne holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she served as Managing Editor of the Law Review. She earned a Master’s degree from the University of Strasbourg, France, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Avignon, France.

Jo Anne was the founding President of the Singapore Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (“ACC”), and currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the ACC global Board of Directors.

Digital Design Sprints

Design sprints are now a well-established problem-solving process designed to generate ideas and solutions in a short time-frame. For example when it comes to developing a new product or a service, or seeking opportunities to improve a product or service.

To ensure creativity continues even when teams can't meet up in person, DWF Ventures have developed an online version of this process to condense existing methodology into a shorter timeframe, using online tools and facilitation techniques, with the added benefit of bringing together people from different locations, specialisms, and levels of seniority which would often be difficult face-to-face.

Case Study - Digital design sprint for a global football club

What was the problem?

The in-house legal team were having operational challenges following the shift to online working.  The first few weeks of lockdown had thrown up a number of challenges in terms of work allocation, supervision, team communication and ultimately team spirit and wellbeing.

What did we do?

DWF Ventures led a Digital Design Sprint, focussing on 4 key elements:

  1. Ways for the team to get more from their existing Microsoft Teams and 365 technology
  2. Clear protocols for  digital communication - what tools are best for different types of communication and the basic etiquette/rules when using
  3. Three options for digital work management and document supervision
  4. A virtual working team charter to address some of the cultural issues of working virtually.

What was the outcome?

The ultimate design received great feedback from the in-house team with the Head of Legal describing it as 'game changing'. The legal team adopted the principles from the design that enabled them to cohesively work together as a team successfully in a digital environment.
