What's in store for the real estate market in 2024?

05 March 2024

That is the question we asked our expert panel at the recent Real Estate Review in London -  an event that brought together professionals from across the entire real estate market.

There is no doubt that 2023 was a tumultuous year for the real estate market. So are we expecting more of the same in 2024, or are there more reasons to be cheerful?

Trevor Williams, ex Chief Economist at Lloyds Commercial Banking opened the event with a keynote speech exploring the powerful driving forces that are shaping the global economy. This set the scene for the panel discussion that delved into the challenges, opportunities and reasons to be optimistic. Speaking on the panel were Mark Anderson, Managing Director of Property & International at Whitbread, Amy Crick, Head of Real Estate London at Barclays, Franco Sidoli, Consultant at CBRE and Yohance Harper, Partner at Quadrant.

One of the most compelling narratives set to influence the market in 2024 is the continued evolution of sustainable practices. With a heightened focus on environmental consciousness and climate resilience, the industry is witnessing a shift towards green building initiatives, energy-efficient designs, and sustainable development. As the global community supports the fight against climate change, alignment in ESG agendas will continue to impact investment decisions.

Carla Revelo, Real Estate Partner in the UK, said, "We are delighted to have hosted so many of our clients and contacts across a wide range of sectors at our recent Real Estate Review event. Our panel of senior industry leaders represented a diverse range of views across real estate finance, investment, development and the occupier sector. With the positive sentiments voiced by our panellists, we anticipate 2024 to be a year of interesting opportunities in the real estate market."

Melanie Williams, Real Estate Partner and Head of the Built Environment & Hospitality Sectors added, "Whilst the market has faced, and continues to face, a multitude of complex challenges there are also a multitude of emerging opportunities which should start to assuage the hunger for cash deployment."

DWF will be launching its Real Estate Insight report shortly, to include an analysis of the anticipated trends, opportunities, and challenges that will define the core property sectors within key European markets and serve as a valuable resource for industry professionals, investors, and stakeholders seeking to navigate the dynamic and ever-evolving real estate landscape in 2024.
