Experience

Will has advised and represented a wide array of healthcare clients including NHS Resolution (formerly NHSLA), NHS Acute and Mental Health Trusts, Medical Defence Organisations, private hospital groups, independent clinics and individual practitioners.

Will has handled healthcare claims from across the full spectrum of medical disciplines, including orthopaedic, paediatric, psychiatric, neurological, surgical and fatal claims.

Will regularly handles maximum severity birth injury claims, with extensive experience of managing very high value quantum settlements, including PPOs. Will has lectured widely on all aspects of quantum, including Ogden and PPOs.

Will's insurance practice includes handling claims for individual self-employed consultants, private healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics, health sector staffing agencies, services ancillary to medicine, pharmacists, physiotherapists, paramedics, mental health & addiction rehabilitation services, cosmetic clinics, body artists, salons and sexual health & family planning services. Will has represented healthcare clients at numerous inquests, and advises widely on criminal, regulatory and disciplinary health care issues. He has also developed a med mal coverage practice and handles a range of complex coverage disputes on insurers’ behalf.

Away from claims, Will works closely with underwriters and brokers in developing new healthcare products and markets, where he has a particular interest in the growing role of technology in healthcare and in developing an international med mal practice.

Recent Cases

Notable recent trials include: Shorter v Surrey & Sussex NHS Healthcare Trust [2015], which is now a leading authority on secondary victim claims; and a number of important High Court surgical trial cases, including Baker v Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust [2015] and Rickwood v North West Hospitals NHS Trust [2015].
