With editions dating back to 1995 the Prisons Handbook is marketed as 'a great point of reference for anyone who wants to learn about the prison system'.
The handbook's editor and publisher, Mr Mark Leech FRSA, spent almost 20 years himself in the prison system and experienced 62 different establishments. Whilst incarcerated he became a correspondent for the Guardian Newspaper and thereafter edited the first edition of the handbook upon his release in 1995.
Now moving towards its 20th publication, the 1200-page guide will cover a wide array of areas including the latest reports, performance standards and statistics, a prison directory and numerous advice notes. Almost 100 pages will also been dedicated to prisoners and the law.
The 2018 edition will contain a number of articles from contributors including:
• A critical assessment of our Prisons by former Director General of HM Prison Service, Mr Phil Wheatley;
• An exclusive article by the Parole Board Chief Executive Martin Jones in light of the recent John Worboys Case; and
• An editorial entitled 'Our Prison System Isn't Creaking; It's Croacked' by Mark Leech, the book's editor.
The annual publication is widely considered to be a reliable source of information and is supported by a number of notable people including Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP, the 2017 Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor, and Sir Martin Narey, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Offender Management Service.
