Experience

Renowned for his agility, Robert is the commercial group’s “go-to” lawyer for advancing and defending various forms of urgent injunctive relief, adeptly navigating the complexities of Mareva, Anton Piller, and Norwich Orders. His capacity to manage a broad array of mandates enables him to devise efficient and effective strategies tailored to the unique aspects of each case, irrespective of complexity, urgency, or jurisdiction.

Called to the bar in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, Robert is passionate about law and engaged by the consumption of it. Robert is a co-author for Nathan & Voore’s Corporate Meetings: Law and Practice, Canada’s comprehensive resource detailing the intricacies of the law governing shareholders’ and directors’ meetings, as well as contested proxy and voting issues. He is also co-author of Fiduciary Duties in Canada, a leading comprehensive reference work analyzing fiduciary obligations across corporate, commercial, professional, and financial relationships. In addition to his published contributions, Robert contributes to the legal profession as a speaker and writer, including presentations for the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia. These contributions reflect Robert’s dedication to legal scholarship, staying current, and engagement in shareholder governance matters, complex reorganizations, and hostile or complex transactions.

Before joining DWF, Robert ran a civil litigation practice, a role that ignited his passion for advocacy. Concomitant with that practice, Robert practiced criminal defence and then later served as a federal prosecutor with the Department of Public Prosecutions—roles that have fostered both a forensic approach to the rules of evidence and his continued success before trial courts (both judge-alone and jury trials) and appellate courts throughout Canada. He has appeared at all court levels in British Columbia and Alberta, as well as the Federal Court.

Now based out of our Toronto office, Robert serves clients across the country and is actively expanding his D&O practice, driven by his desire to collaborate with executives, high net-worth individuals, and corporations to manage risk, assess and mitigate liability exposure, and develop and implement resolution strategies for active claims.
