Sizewell B powers on until 2055

A 20-year extension for Sizewell B nuclear power station to 2055 has been agreed, supporting energy security, low-carbon generation and regional jobs. The deal aims to reduce long-term system costs, stabilise bills and maintain nuclear capacity.

Background

The UK Government and EDF have agreed terms to a 20-year life extension of the Sizewell B nuclear power station in Suffolk, enabling it to continue operating until 2055. Originally due to close in 2035, Sizewell B is the country's only operational pressurised water reactor and is currently responsible for the generation of around 3% of the UK's electricity, powering around 2.5 million homes. The decision to extend its lifespan reflects the growing emphasis on energy security, with policymakers seeking to ensure that Britain has access to dependable domestic sources of electricity amid continuing geopolitical and energy market uncertainty.

Alongside major projects such as Sizewell C and the development of small modular reactors, extending the life of existing nuclear assets, such as Sizewell B, is viewed as a practical way of maintaining generating capacity while new infrastructure is brought online. Ministers have described this policy as part of a wider "golden age of nuclear" for the UK, with the projects being expected to play a significant role in meeting growing electricity demand driven by electrification, digital technologies, and economic growth.

Benefits of the extension

There are two key factors behind the decision to extend the life of Sizewell B:

1. The belief that continuing to operate Sizewell B will be more cost-effective than replacing its output through alternative generation alone. This will help provide greater stability within the energy system, shielding households and businesses from fluctuations in international fossil fuel markets.

2. The agreement is also intended provide an economic boost to the local region by supporting around 900 skilled jobs in Suffolk while helping to retain specialist nuclear expertise and strengthen supply chains.

What does this mean for an ordinary consumer?

Under the proposed Contract for Difference for the extension period (2035-2055), Sizewell B will receive a guaranteed price of £70.50/MWh (subject to indexation). Whilst this arrangement ultimately could lead to consumers contributing towards the station's agreed pricing arrangement through increased energy bills, the Government argues the protection of households from future energy price volatility is worth this possibility. By maintaining a large source of domestic, low-carbon electricity, the extension is expected to reduce overall system costs and lessen reliance on imported fossil fuels, helping to support more stable energy bills over the longer term. Noting that the Contract for Difference model is used to support and promote other net zero energy generation technologies in the UK.

Further implications

Given the strategic importance of secure, baseload nuclear energy generation and its key part in the UK’s energy mix, this is a welcomed announcement, ultimately, demonstrating both the integral part the nuclear industry plays in securing the UK’s energy security, whilst simultaneously sending a clear signal to investors and the wider market of the UK commitment to nuclear energy being a central component of its long-term energy strategy.

Whilst the agreement remains subject to final contractual and regulatory processes, there is comfort that any extension to the generation lifetime of Sizewell B, and any future extensions, will have been subject to proportionate and detailed safety scrutiny from the regulators. This approach may even prove to establish an important precedent for future policy decisions concerning existing strategic energy assets, especially in a time where older nuclear plants are retiring and new projects are in the pipeline, extensions to lifespans could be utilised to address any potential supply gaps and continue the push for the UK's long-term energy security.
