Throughout the week we shared content on external and internal events on neurodiversity, showcased role models such as Harriet Quiney and highlighted new resources to support the provision of workplace adjustments.
We also took the opportunity to launch the new name for our disability network, Diverse Ability.
The decision to change the network name was based on feedback from our colleagues and our desire to be as inclusive as possible. The language used when describing disabilities is a much debated, sensitive and personal topic. There are also a lot of negative connotations, stereotypes and myths linked to disabilities. Instead we wanted to focus positively on how we can support our colleagues in being their best and celebrate their talents.
This change will help our network to be more inclusive and accessible to:
- Individuals who are neurodiverse / neurodivergent.
- People with hidden and / or visible disabilities, conditions or impairments.
- Those that do not consider themselves to be disabled as they successfully use adaptations or have always lived with their disability, condition or impairment.
- Those with variable ability on a permanent or temporary basis. For example, through aging, injury or illness.
- Allies and carers.
Through our network we will continue to support the diverse abilities of our workforce and empower allies to make a difference.
