Experience

James has worked on some of the highest profile reinsurance disputes and has acted for both cedants and reinsurers on all forms of reinsurance and retrocession contract. James has advised the majority of London Market reinsurers in relation to coverage issues associated with the Covid-19 pandemic and acts for the market on a number of related arbitrations under different business lines including property, contingency and accident and health. 

Beyond Covid-19, James has advised on coverage issues in respect of natural catastrophe losses including the Thai Floods, Australian wildfires, Fort McMurray wildfires, Typhoons Faxai and Hagibis, and Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Ida. James has also advised on human losses, including terrorism, kidnap and ransom and E&O claims to reinsurance contracts. The majority of James' reinsurance work is multi-jurisdictional, and he has acted on international arbitrations and litigated disputes. Closer to home, James has advised on reinsurance issues arising from liquidation of insurance companies and domestic disputes. His non-contentious experience involves advising on wordings and drafting contracts for reinsurance programs (both life and non-life).

In the energy sector, James advises insurers in relation to onshore and offshore coverage and subrogation issues. He has advised on claims to construction and operational policies covering assets across the globe. James' recent experience includes working for insurers in relation to a property and business interruption claim following damage to a Moroccan solar power plant, advising reinsurers on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and acting for insurers in in respect of groundwater contamination claims in the US.
