Experience

Ian brings over 25 years of market experience/expertise to his role as a litigation partner within DWF’s London Market & Global Risks insurance team and has consistently counselled and represented a blue-chip client base of international insurers, reinsurers, intermediaries, and major corporations in high-stakes, market-shaping disputes.

Ian specialises in complex insurance and reinsurance litigation and arbitration across England & Wales, continental Europe, the US, and the Caribbean. Having started his career as a reinsurance coverage litigator, he maintains his work for the reinsurance market (including in relation to Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict). More broadly, his practice is focused on casualty claims (both coverage and defence) and he is a recognised lead on excess casualty claims including on the "Bermuda Form," handling casualty exposures on a global scale. Ian also advises regularly on product liability and product recall, including counselling one of the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers. A significant portion of his recent caseload has involved serving as trusted counsel on multi-million-pound property claims, managing everything from large-scale subrogation actions to complex primary defence. He has been heavily involved in the Covid-19 litigation in England & Wales as well as advising carriers in relation to cross border exposures

Beyond disputes, Ian leverages his technical acumen to assist clients with bespoke policy drafting and strategic wording analysis to mitigate future risk. Integrated into the London and Bermuda insurance markets, he is an adjunct member of the International Association of Claims Professionals and has served on various market committees. He is also a respected industry voice, having co-authored numerous leading textbooks (including Reinsurance Practice & the Law), spoken widely at market events, and authored numerous articles for the market, legal, and national press.
