Bhavya Rawal speaks on legal tech, international law experience at University of Calgary Law School Panel

06 September 2023
Bhavya Rawal shares her journey as a Legal Technology Consultant in the UK, after training as a lawyer in Canada, at a panel hosted by the University of Calgary Law School in London.

Bhavya Rawal, a Legal Technology Consultant for the Legal Operations team at DWF, recently spoke at a panel held in London about her experiences in the London legal market. She addressed the 2023 Corporate Law Summer institute students from her Alma Mater, the University of Calgary Law School.

The panel featured three graduates of University of Calgary who have gone on to work in the London legal market including Bhavya, Michael Kariya (Partner - Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP) and Stephen Vincelli (Associate – Fasken). The panel was led by Bryce C. Tingle, N. Murray Edwards Chair in Business Law at the University of Calgary. They were tasked with speaking about their journeys “across the pond.”

“It was wonderful to speak to law students interested in building an international legal career,” Bhavya said. “Together with Bryce, Michael and Stephen, we were able to speak to how to get hired in London, adjusting to a foreign market and how we enjoy working at large international law firms.”

The audience was a group of University of Calgary JD students participating in the Corporate Law Summer Institute. The programme has been created for students who are interested in international business transactions. Over the course of 3 weeks students are exposed to key legal institutions in London as well as the relevant legal issues arising from international business transactions. This session focused primarily on London as an international centre of business.

“London is certainly a unique place as far as Legal Tech is concerned and I’m glad a family move in 2018 opened this door for me,” Bhavya said. “London is increasingly a hub for new legal tech companies, legal operations and consultancy and forward-looking work combining tech and law.”

Bhavya also spoke about her experience working with the Legal Operations team at DWF and how it affords her new ways to consult on technology.

“One of the largest benefits of working for DWF is the ability to offer not just innovative approaches to legal tech, but to be able to provide it as part of a holistic offering through technology adoption and digital transformation,” she said. “I’m glad to be part of an organization which is always looking to drive new paths in the world of law, and was happy to share this experience with the future international lawyers and hopefully some budding legal technologists.”

Bhavya Rawal has a dual background in law and technology. She currently works as a legal technology consultant with DWF – a leading global provider of integrated legal and business services. To learn more about how she can help your organization across the legal tech spectrum, contact her here.
