Matt Watson

Matt is a Solicitor in the Financial Services Regulatory team providing advice to regulated firms and individuals across the financial services market. His work is spread across a number of sectors including wealth management, insurance, consumer credit and banking.

Experience

Matt works closely with clients to understand their business with a focus on bespoke FCA advice, contractual documentation and larger scale remediation and due diligence projects. This includes both contentious and non-contentious regulatory work.

Advisory experience:

  • Assisted a number of UK wealth management firms on contract remediation and the re-papering of customers. 
  • Worked alongside both ACD and investment management firms to advise on the structuring of co-manufacturing arrangements and the associated fee structures.Advised a major online investment platform on its position under the FCA perimeter in the development of a new retail trading app.
  • Assisted an online marketplace in relation to its position under the Payments Services Directive II.
  • Regularly advises on the FCA Handbook, including Consumer Duty and MiFID requirements, particularly within the UK wealth management market. 

Matt also provides significant transactional corporate support to clients including undertaking large-scale due diligence exercises, advising on FCA notification requirements and regulatory structuring. He has recently worked closely with a UK private equity backed joint venture on the acquisition of a number of regulated firms within the mortgages and insurance sector.

Matt is responsible for providing project and wider management support on large scale regulatory projects across the regulated financial services industry. This has included assisting firms with multiple and potentially systemic FOS complaint scenarios and he has experience working on a s.166 skilled person review.
