DWF celebrates International Women's Day in Belfast

09 March 2023

DWF, the global provider of integrated legal and business services, hosted a lunch event at the Merchant Hotel in Belfast yesterday to celebrate International Women's Day 2023.

The event, compered by UTV sports correspondent, Ruth Gorman, focused on the theme of 'women in sport', and 'embracing equity' as per the national theme for the day.

Addressing the room of attendees which comprised DWF colleagues and clients, the County Down-born reporter offered a piece of advice to the females in the audience, she said: "Every woman's success should be an inspiration to another, the more that we can help each other, the stronger we can be together; build each other up."

Paying homage to local sportswomen, the panel of speakers included Shirley McCay MBE, who played in the Women's Hockey World Cup final in 2018; Irish Ironman record holder and only Irish Ironman winner, Eimear Mullan; and DWF Insurance team solicitor, Irish Women's Lacrosse League player and coach of Queen's University Belfast's Women's Lacrosse Club, Amber Newell.

Ireland's most capped women's field hockey international, Shirley McCay MBE spoke modestly of receiving her recent MBE, which she received from HRH The Prince of Wales, she said: "I'm picking up those accolades on behalf of the inspirational women that inspired me and motivated me to get to where I am. It is unbelievable that I'm now able to give back what I got from the sport to the young girls and boys that I coach."

Commenting on the event, DWF office managing partner, Julie Galbraith said: "It was a privilege to celebrate International Women's Day with a room full of inspirational women, and to hear the personal accounts from some of our local sportswomen on how they have overcome adversity to encourage and embrace equity, not only in the world of sport but also in their professional careers and everyday lives."
