Consumer Regulatory News: new EU product safety regulations and dodgy advertising

30 January 2025

Our Consumer Regulatory Team bring you up to date with the new EU product safety regulations. You will also find guidance on how NOT to advertise your business and the latest updates from the retail, food and hospitality sector.

On 8 December the EU's product liability directive entered into force bringing with it an extension of liability and an extension of what might be considered a product, with the General Product Safety Regulation also coming into force on 13 December.  Dominic Watkins, Head of the Consumer Regulatory Team, considers the potential impact in terms of responsibility for businesses in the supply chain and what the consequences might be.  Read his in-depth analysis here

We all know the power of advertising and whilst consumers might accept being influenced, they do not tolerate being misled.  Katharine Mason and Dominic Watkins take a look at the recent interventions by the Advertising Standards Agency and offer some helpful guidance on ensuring business or products are not misrepresented to consumers in advertising. You can find their article here.

Finally, Hilary Ross and Dominic round up the latest news from the Food, Retail and Hospitality sector in their weekly briefing covering ticket re-selling, “Tourist taxes” and alcohol-free beer amongst other recent issues.  You can also sign up to receive these comprehensive weekly updates direct to your in-box.  Find this week’s update here.
