Developing female talent through peer mentoring

17 April 2023

In March 2023, DWF launched a new peer-to-peer mentoring scheme for female colleagues in collaboration with its client Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

The aim of this programme is to support the progression of female talent through skills development and confidence building in support of our ambition for greater gender balance.

Female volunteers in both organisations were asked to provide details of their three key strengths and three opportunities for growth.  This information was used to pair volunteers with individuals that would complement their skillset so that participants could build confidence in their own abilities whilst also benefiting from the experiences of others.

Run over a period of six month, this virtual programme allows participants to share their challenges with an impartial party, gain an alternative perspective and collaborate on solutions via monthly calls.

The programme brings all the participants together for virtual launch, mid-point and closing events, giving an opportunity to share feedback and for organisers to provide training resources based on the common development areas highlighted by the group.

This marks the second time DWF and Enterprise Rent-A-Car have collaborated on peer mentoring having previously run a scheme with ten pairs of volunteers that came to a close in May 2022.

Feedback from this initial roll out was extremely positive. Participants shared that it provided 'free flowing, non-judgemental discussion', 'mutual support and encouragement', 'insight from a different industry', and 'a safe space'. Since the end of the programme, many pairings have stayed in contact, participants have been involved in innovative work and some have been promoted.

Based on feedback from the initial cohort, our 2023 roll out includes colleagues from more grades.

Seema Bains, Partner and Head of DWF's Global D&I Leadership Group said, 'DWF is delighted with the ongoing success of these programmes and to be collaborating with our clients to invest in the progression of female talent.'

Jennifer Koontz, Assistant vice-president at Enterprise Holdings added, “We’re pleased to launch a second round of peer-to-peer mentoring with our partner, DWF, after a successful pilot last year. Mentorships in all forms are invaluable at all career stages and we’re fortunate to have this opportunity. Providing peer mentors and connecting female talent across both organizations creates a space for great things to happen.”
