A dialogue on LGBTQIA+ discrimination in the workplace

26 May 2022

The DWF LGBTQIA+ Employee Network, OutFront, have created events and content to support colleagues understand LGBTQIA+ discrimination, particularly in the workplace, and what steps can be taken to prevent it.

Studies have found that a large proportion of LGBTQIA+ people experience discrimination in the workplace. This can impact an individual's confidence and mental wellness and effect job and financial stability.

It is therefore important for us to build awareness of the issues and what was we can do to end discrimination on this kind.

On 17 May, International Day of Homophobia, Biphobia, Lesbophobia and Transphobia (IDAHoBiLT) is marked across the world. It is observed in more than 130 countries worldwide and helps shine a light on the discrimination and violence that LGBT+ people can experience.

To mark this occasion in 2022, our OutFront Network created 'Ask Us Anything' webinars, taking place across two time slots to accommodate our global colleagues and as many time zones as possible. The aim of these sessions was to provide colleagues with an opportunity to ask questions that they need advice on to assist them personally or to build their awareness. For example, a Trans person may have a question about transitioning in the workplace or an ally might have a question about an LGBTQIA+ term that they don’t understand. This session was designed to allow colleagues to submit anonymous questions that were then be discussed in a safe space environment. These session generated some great questions and insightful discussions, providing the OutFront network with some fantastic feedback and ideas for the future.

To mark IDAHoBiLT 2022, OutFront have also shared content on types of LGBTQIA+ discrimination and advice for allies on how to prevent it.

The OutFront Network is working hard to support colleagues, raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ challenges and help allies create greater inclusion at DWF.
