Experience
Abi works closely with the Head of Pro Bono and Community in Australia to build meaningful partnerships with community organisations, provide legal assistance to not-for-profit organisations and individuals, and to partner with commercial and community organisations on strategic volunteering initiatives.
Throughout her career, Abi has gained valuable experience working in both corporate law firms and community legal centres. She has always maintained a strong commitment to pro bono work, beginning during her university studies and continuing post-qualification through volunteering and pro bono secondments. During her time at university, Abi was involved in a number of research projects at the University of Queensland Pro Bono Centre, including the Right to Education Project.
Abi's previous experience as a corporate lawyer has refined her technical expertise, enabling her to provide exceptional legal counsel to her pro bono clients. Her past volunteer work at the Refugee and Immigration Legal Service and pro bono secondments to Environmental Justice Australia and Refugee Legal developed her strong skills in client management, particularly with vulnerable clients. In her role as a passionate advocate in refugee law, Abi assisted both offshore and onshore clients seeking permanent residency, advising on protection visas, offshore refugee visas, and partner visas in the context of family violence.
Outside of her work life, Abi has worked as an Events and Programming Director at the Australian Professional Tamil Association and a Peer Mentor at Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma.
Abi holds a Bachelor of Commerce / Laws (Honours) from the University of Queensland.
