Karin undertook both contentious and advisory work in construction and infrastructure sectors, as well as assisting international corporate clients to establish their businesses in Qatar. She has represented clients in arbitral proceedings conducted under the arbitration rules of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and Qatar International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA).
She has previous experiences in advising clients in resolving disputes arising from retail, commercial and investment banking, consumer credit matters, debt recovery and security enforcement.
Recent Cases
- Representing a renowned international construction company before the ICC in a multimillion (QAR) construction dispute arising from a sub-contract agreement to carry out construction and engineering works in relation to the development of transportation project in Doha (ongoing matter).
- Representing a joint venture in an ICC arbitration against the subcontractor in relation to a rail project in Qatar (ongoing matter).
- Representing a Qatari real estate development company in an LCIA arbitration in connection with a hotel management agreement relating to a new hotel development in Doha, Qatar (matter ongoing).
- Representing a development and asset management company in connection with a Doha-seated Qatar International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) arbitration under Qatar law (matter ongoing).
- Representing a local subsidiary of a British multinational construction company and another Qatari construction company, in an ICC arbitration in relation to a city re-development project.
- Advised a leading manufacturer of mobility solutions in respect of an ICC arbitration. The construction project dispute was worth US$25 million.
- Represented a major engineering consultancy company before the LCIA in a multimillion-dollar construction dispute arising from a joint venture agreement.
- Representing a joint venture in an ICC arbitration against the subcontractor in relation to a wastewater treatments and sewage treatment dispute in Qatar (ongoing matter).
- Advised clients on contractual disputes to defend or initiate breach of contract claims, including reviewing a variety of high value commercial contracts for construction projects, confidentiality agreements and standard terms and conditions, and drafting advice notes on the contractual interpretation and merits of the same contracts.
- Represented a global retail and commercial bank in relation to four claims brought against the bank alleging direct and indirect discrimination under the Equality Act 2010, breach of contract and breach of US and EU/UK sanctions laws and regulations. The claims together are worth more than GBP31 million.
- Acted for leading financial institutions in a range of complex, high value and strategically important claims involving allegations of breach of contract, breach of statutory duty, professional negligence, undue influence, economic duress, product mis-selling and unfair relationships.
- Represented a provider of Managed Services and Specialist Staffing in relation to a claim brought against them alleging breach of statutory duty under the Data Protection Act 1998, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the GDPR and breach of human rights under the Human Rights Act 1998.
- Represented three global banks and two online retailers and financial services providers in relation to numerous payment protection insurance (PPI) claims brought against them arising from alleged mis-selling and unfair relationships created by the customers entering into the policies.
- Advised firms on regulatory compliance issues including mis-selling, systems and controls failings and governance issues, as well responding to the Financial Conduct Authority’s enforcement actions and providing support to clients in relation to internal investigations.
