Important Updates
Environment Bill re-introduced to parliament: The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs reintroduced the Bill to the new parliament on 30 January. The Bill sets out to:
- create a new governance framework for the environment;
- set a new direction for resources and waste management;
- improve air quality;
- secure water services;
- enhance green spaces; and
- update laws on chemicals (REACH).
The Bill aims to set legally-binding environmental improvement targets. A new independent Office for Environmental Protection will be established to scrutinise environmental policy and law, investigate complaints and take enforcement action against public authorities, if necessary, to uphold environmental standards. The office’s powers will cover all climate change legislation and hold the government to account on its commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
