Retail, Food & Hospitality regulatory round-up 11 August

14 August 2019
Retail, Food, and Hospitality Regulatory Update w/e 11 August: Misleading price comparisons, energy density levy on processed foods, and IPPC report on climate change.

Important Updates

Misleading price comparisons reported: The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld complaints concerning price saving claims made by Laptops Direct and Virgin Media Experiences for failure to substantiate prices from which reductions were claimed.  In the case of Laptops Direct an administrative error was claimed on the basis of initial listing at an incorrect higher price and on correction this having been picked up as a saving on the previous price. For Virgin Media it was not clear that a comparison was not with a previous price but against a calculation of individual prices for a visit and meal experience at the Shard which had selected the highest price options for the comparison. View >  View >

Call for energy density levy on processed foods:
Professor Graham McGregor, Action on Sugar / Salt / Sustain has published a press release calling for an energy density levy on processed foods arguing that this would drive reformulation.  Examples cited included variations of fat in chocolate cakes from 12.2g to 27.5g per 100g, fat in Victoria sponges from 8.5g to 24.7g per 100g and saturated fat in Rich Tea biscuits from 1.2g to 7.2g per 100g. Apparent success of the soft drinks levy is cited. View >

IPPC report on climate change and land published: The Inter-Governmental Panel on climate change has published a detailed report on the impact of agriculture on greenhouse gas emissions and the need to change to farming and land use practices. View >  Sustain >
