Ursula Von Der Leyen elected as European Commission President: Following a secret ballot on 16th July, Ursula Von Der Lyon was elected (383 members voted in favour, 327 against, and 22 abstained) as the first female president of the EU Commission.  View >

The new president outlined her vision for bolder emissions targets, with a reduction of 50% to 55% by 2030 and committed to submit a plan for a “Green Deal for Europe” and a European Climate Law within her first 100 days in office. View >  View >

DIT publish responses to bilateral trade consultations: 
The Department for International Trade has published responses to its consultations on future trade agreements with Australia, NZ, USA and the Trans Pacific Partnership. Food and Drink Federation respond to House of Commons Brexit Committee: 
FDF welcomed the findings in the Committee's report that a no-deal exit from the EU would be disastrous for the UK's food and drink industry. Within weeks it is likely that shoppers would notice significant and adverse changes to the products available and random, selective shortages. Limited shelf life products would face the most immediate risk. A no deal Brexit would in the FDF’S view destroy £18.5bn of UK food and drink manufacturing, with grave consequences for UK consumers. View >

EU Exit Common frameworks report published: 
The Cabinet Office report details the progress under Schedule 3 to the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018. On the basis of the continuing joint progress and collaboration on common frameworks, the UK Government has not sought to bring forward any section 12 regulations to date. On the basis of this, the Scottish and Welsh Governments have committed to not create divergent policy in ways that would cut across future frameworks, where it has been agreed they are necessary or where discussion continues.  View >
