Retail, Food & Retail Regulatory round-up w/e 2 June: Welsh minimum alcohol, allergens and food hygiene rating scheme, and health requirements on hospital premises. 

Important Updates

Welsh minimum alcohol encounters EU hurdle: An EU member state has raised objection to Welsh Regulations notified to the EU Commission re setting a 50p minimum unit price for alcohol.  It is now up to the Welsh Government to make representations to the EU Commission who will decide whether the regulations can proceed. View >

Allergens and food hygiene rating scheme
The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health has called for inclusion of ‘allergen hygiene’ within the FSA premises Food hygiene rating scheme and also for responsibilities between Trading Standards and Environmental Health departments to be clarified. View >

Health requirements relating to hospital premises: 
The Scottish Government ‘Health Standard’ agreed by retailers trading on NHS premises in Scotland has been changed to ban the sale of high energy drinks to under 16’s. View >

Public Health England has called for a ban on smoking in the grounds of all NHS hospitals. View >

Call for evidence on trade in ivory:
 DEFRA has issued a call for evidence on trade in ivory from a variety of animals other than elephants. Responses by 22nd August.  View >  View >

Responsible drinking practices rising in the UK:
The Portman group has published a detailed set of tables showing reduction in binge drinking, decrease in number of people consuming alcohol on more than five days a week and more people falling within the Chief Medical Officers 14 units per day limit. View >
