Important Updates

Consultation on advertising restrictions for high fat, salt, sugar foods: The Department for Health and Social Care and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport have issued a consultation on the introduction of a ban on the broadcast advertising of high fat, salt and sugar foods between 05:30am and 09:00pm.  The proposed ban would apply to high fat, salt and sugar foods identified using the 2004/5 Nutritional Profiling Model (NPM) and cover products subject to sugar and calorie reduction programmes and the soft drinks industry levy.  The consultation asks about how to apply the controls to online content in addition to video adverts.  The consultation suggests that a banding system could apply to day time advertising to encourage reformulation. Theclosing date for responding is 10th June. View >View >

EU proposes consumer protection fines of £2 million Euro or up to 4% of annual turnover: 
An EU proposal addressing transparency of online rating systems and the dual marketing of products (products with the same labelling but different compositional standards in different member states) has proposed that member states should be able to levy penalties of up to 4% of annual turnover in respect of contraventions. Would have a long way to go to become law but is being led by a UK MEP Daniel Dalton. View >View >

Conflict minerals due diligence: The EU has passed a regulation setting out assessment criteria for assessing supply chain due diligence schemes in respect of conflict minerals tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold. View >
