Call for evidence on cyber security: The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has issued a call for evidence to understand the barriers which prevent organisations from improving their cyber security; understand the effectiveness of existing regulations and guidance including GDPR and NIS; and develop a range of policy proposals to address any gaps – Responses by 20th December.  View > View >

Report on the value of Trading Standards: The Association of Chief Trading Standards Officers has published a report on the activities of Local Authority Trading Standards Services in the past year.  The report claims a saving of £42m in consumer detriment, 1.3 million unsafe products and 4.2 million counterfeit products being taken off the market, 1100 prosecutions and 5716 test purchases with a 22% failure rate. Progress report on retail commitments to cut food waste: WRAP has published a detailed report on progress being made by individual retailers and the retail sector to cut food waste.  Progress has been seen in a number of areas including available product life extension on dairy products, removal of date codes and adoption of the blue fridge logo on fresh produce and use of the snowflake logo on bread. A need for more action was highlighted in other areas - extending available product life or removing Best Before labels on potatoes, removing/amending open life statements, particularly on cheese, and inclusion of cook from frozen advice on meat items.  The report is accompanied by further guidance on fresh uncut fruit and veg from WRAP, DEFRA and FSA.
