Food & Retail Regulatory round-up w/e 24 June: Government plan to tackle childhood obesity published; Tighter controls on the sale of knives and corrosive substances.

Important Updates

Government plan to tackle childhood obesity published: The Department for Health and Social care has published the second chapter of its plan to reduce childhood obesity by 50% by 2030. The plan includes proposals to ban multibuy promotions for ‘unhealthy’ foods and to prevent their display at checkouts. Other proposals include consulting on mandatory inclusion of calorie information on menu’s and providing incentives to manufacturers to produce healthier options. The Scottish Government has also responded to a Cancer UK claim that Children in Scotland eat more than a million sweets each week. View >


Tighter controls on the sale of knives and corrosive substances: The Home Office has introduced an Offence Weapons Bill which will make it illegal to deliver knives ordered on line to domestic premises.  The Bill if passed will also make it illegal to sell corrosive substances to anyone under the age of 18. View >


Microbead ban now in force: DEFRA has issued a press release on the ban on sale of toiletries and household products containing plastic microbeads coming into force on 19th June. View >

EU Withdrawal Bill progresses towards Royal Assent:  Following ping pong negotiations between the Houses of Commons and the Lords the Bill on 20th June the Bill now awaits royal assent which is not yet scheduled. View >
