Food & Retail Regulatory round-up w/e 1 April: ASA rulings drive change to price comparison practices; Deposit return schemes in prospect for drinks containers

ASA rulings drive change to price comparison practices: In ground breaking rulings this week the Advertising Standards Authority has set new advertising standards for making price comparisons:

  • DSG Retail:  Showing the dates during which a higher price has applied does not make it the ‘Usual price’ implied in a was-now price comparison. View >
  • SCS: Pricing advertising for furniture must include whether delivery charges apply View >

The ASA has also ruled that .co.uk websites must declare the geographical origin of the business if not based in the UK. View >

 

Deposit return schemes in prospect for drinks containers: DEFRA has announced its intention following its recent call for evidence to consult in the summer on the introduction of deposit return schemes for metal, glass and plastic single trip drinks containers. View >

 

£1m penalty for failure to protect vulnerable consumers: The Gambling Commission has given details of a £1m penalty imposed on SkyBet for failure to protect vulnerable consumers and has outlined further steps it is to take to ensure the safety of gamblers. View >
The Competition and Markets Authority plan for 2018/19 is also to focus on the protection of vulnerable consumers in gambling and other sectors. View >

Devolved administrations remain critical of UK Government approach:

The Welsh Assembly Government has challenged the UK Government to make transparent the kind of Brexit that it wants. View > The Scottish Government has written to the UK Government over the transitional agreement with regard to access to fisheries. View >

 

Retail sector comments on one year to Brexit: The Director General of the British Retail Consortium, Helen Dickinson OBE has set out the sectors position on Brexit with one year to go. View >

 

Bilateral agreement for better intellectual property protection in Brazil: The Department for International Trade has highlighted the signing of an agreement between UK and Brazil Intellectual property offices (IPO and INPO) to establish a patent prosecution highway to speed up protections. View >
