Food & Retail Regulatory round-up w/e 4 March: £0.50 to be set as minimum price per unit of alcohol in Scotland; Food hygiene review of meat processing plants

£0.50 to be set as minimum price per unit of alcohol in Scotland: Following legal battles and consultation the Scottish Government has determined that 50p per unit will be the minimum price at which Alcohol can be sold in Scotland and has launched an awareness raising campaign.  View >

 

Food hygiene review of meat processing plants: The Food Standards Agency has published further detail on its planned review following the Two Sisters and Russell Hume investigations. View >  
Food Standards Scotland has also been in discussion with the Scottish meat sector. View >

 

Gambling sector under sustained pressure on standards:

  • The Competition and Markets Authority has announced that it is taking action over restrictions on ability of customers to gain access to their money which has been welcomed by the Gambling Commission. View >
  • The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint against William Hill for failure to make the conditions of a promotion clear in TV advertising. View >

Brexit Developments

EU Commission publish draft withdrawal agreement: The EU has published the first draft of its legal text setting out terms for UK withdrawal from the EU together with a fact sheet and statement from EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier. View >

Michel Barnier has also delivered a speech on Business Europe day. View >

 

Prime Minister sets out UK vision for future economic partnership: Theresa May delivered a major speech setting out the UK negotiating position for a future economic partnership between the UK and EU. View > 

The speech has drawn prompt responses from business organisations including: 
British Chambers of Commerce > Confederation of British Industry > Federation of Small Businesses > Food and Drink Federation >

 

Importance of future access to EU 3rd country trade deals for food: The Food and Drink Federation has published report on the need to ensure that the benefits of EU 3rd country trade deals are in place post Brexit. View >
