In responding to the independent review of employment practices in the GIG economy the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has published four consultation papers as follows:

Review of Aflatoxin limit for peanuts:
The European Food Safety Authority has published an opinion on the health consequences of a potential 2.5 times increase in the permitted level of aflatoxin contamination of food by peanuts from 4 to 10ug/kg coming to the conclusion that it would increase cancer risk by a factor of 1.6-1.8. View >
Food Standards Scotland publish Campylobacter research:
Food Standards Scotland has published research from Aberdeen University showing incidence of Campylobacter infections having reduced in poultry and showing significant levels from cows (11%), sheep (26%) and wild birds (8%). View >
EU Issues notification to stakeholders on implications of Brexit for food law:
The potential impact of the UK becoming regarded by the EU as a third country are made transparent (subject to negotiation) by a notification to stakeholders published by EU Dg Food Health and Safety and EU Dg Agriculture.
The notification covers food labelling, health marking and authorisation requirements the key points being as follows:
- EU will no longer apply as a country of origin marking for UK food. Health marking will require to be UK rather than EU subject to EU plant approval and EU listing of the UK as a country from which product may be imported.
- EU authorisations issued in the UK will no longer be valid for EU supply.
- Import of products of animal origin would be restricted to Border inspection posts and subject to health certification / phytosanitary certificates and consignment checks
- Use of the EU organics logo would not be permitted for approvals by UK bodies. View >
