Food & Retail Regulatory round-up w/e 7 October: Proposals to restrict in store marketing and promotion of ‘Discretionary’ foods

Proposals to restrict in store marketing and promotion of ‘discretionary’ foods: The Scottish Government has launched a consultation on plans to target a range of food types high in energy, fat, salt and sugar including confectionery, sweet biscuits, crisps and savoury snacks, pasties, cakes, puddings and soft drinks with added sugar. Plans include a ban on price promotion, discounts, coupons and multibuy promotions and location of products in these categories at checkouts. View >


The consultation also asks whether price promotions due to short shelf life should be permitted. The Scottish Government recognises that no other country in the world currently has controls of this nature. Closing date for responses 9th January 2019. View >


Call for evidence on late payment culture: The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is gathering evidence of the extent and impact of late payment practices on businesses and whether and what further action might be considered. Closing date for responses 29th November. View >


£15m pilot to explore ways to tackle food waste: The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced launch of a pilot study to find ways to reduce the food waste generated by manufacture and retail. View >
