From Apprentice to Solicitor

04 March 2019

Holly O'Brien talks about her aspiring career goals after she was given the opportunity of working for a Solicitor Apprenticeship at DWF.

I started working at DWF in September 2016, when I applied and was employed as a Paralegal Apprentice. Towards the end of this, I was given the opportunity to apply for the Solicitor Apprenticeship Programme. After assessments and interviews I was told that I had been selected to start this scheme.

The Solicitor Apprenticeship consists of four days working in the office and one day studying at BPP Law School. By the end of the five year scheme, I will have gained a law degree and will be a qualified Solicitor. I feel my progression onto the Solicitor Apprenticeship has been my greatest achievement so far.

Through my time at DWF I have also been able to achieve many other career goals. I am currently working in the London Catastrophic Personal Injury Team, which has allowed me to gain invaluable experience in this area. My day to day role includes drafting Court documents, attending meetings, going to Court and assisting in the litigation process of cases. I have also been able to attend seminars and in house training. This has allowed me to enhance my technical abilities and knowledge of the law in this area.

I have had the opportunity to meet with clients, experts and barristers through events and meetings which has allowed me to improve my communication skills and begin to build a network of contacts. My apprenticeships at DWF have also allowed me to get involved in other activities, outside of the work environment. Within the last two years I have competed in the Royal Parks Half Marathon, raising money for charity and have volunteered at an inner London community garden centre for primary school students and refugees. Most recently I have been able to join the London Young Professionals committee.

I believe my time at DWF have provided me multiple opportunities and look forward to achieving further goals as my Apprenticeship progresses.
