DWF's experienced police team understands the unprecedented scrutiny that police forces are under. We provide innovative and pragmatic solutions and have notable successes in identifying savings to reduce the overall financial burden in dealing with civil issues.

Why work with our Police Malfeasance team?

DWF is a specialist legal advisor to police forces. Many of our cases are sensitive in nature and high profile. We work closely with clients to manage reputational risk and deliver positive outcomes in all we do. We understand the importance of open and clear communication and work to develop close relationships with our clients, keeping them informed at each stage. We are able to deliver any matter in line with your timescales and expectations, whilst delivering value, flexible pricing models and the highest standard of work.

DWF is proud to be one of only two legal advisors appointed in respect of civil claims on the National Legal Services Framework operated by the Majors Office for Policing and Crime.

Experience

Cliff Richard v BBC & South Yorkshire Police
In the judgment, the judge, Mann J commented on the credibility and honesty of the force's witnesses, and our proactive approach in providing an early acceptance of South Yorkshire Police's failings. This advice, together, with strong early offers resulted in indemnity costs being awarded to our client.
Recent trial success
We recently defended a police force against a claim for wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and assault following the Claimant's arrest for breach of the peace. The claim was dismissed in its entirety following a three day Jury Trial with £30,000 on account of costs being ordered to be paid by the Claimant to our client.
Witness protection
We are currently dealing with numerous High Court litigated claims brought by former protected persons, who are suing the relevant forces in negligence / pursuant to the Article 8 ECHR including damages for psychological injuries.
Pre-Action Disclosure ("PAD") Applications
We have recent experience in resisting several wide reaching PAD applications whilst obtaining costs orders in our clients favour. As these applications have increased we have supported our clients in developing a strategy to prevent them.
